Album Review: “Sometimes You Hurt the Ones You Hate” by Damien Jurado

Seattle native, Damien Jurado, has been active in the music scene for the past 25 years and he has the talent to back-up his quarter-century journey in the art form. Jurado’s March 2023 release, “Sometimes You Hurt the Ones You Hate,” is his latest entry to his discography and at an only 23-minute run-time it is an easily digestible work that serves as a great addition to the musician’s career. Whether a long time or new listener of Jurado, his indie rock perspective brought to this exploration of folk music is an intriguing combination that takes you through moments from Jurado’s life. Whether it’s his mom losing him in a Neiman Marcus or figuring out where he stands with a loved
one, Jurado’s lyrics take the listener on a journey and invite them to have a deeper understanding of his life and perspective. “Sometimes You Hurt the Ones You Hate” is an excellent installment to Jurado’s storied career and makes one excited to see what he does with his next artistic endeavor.
