"A Brief HERstory" is the first of four screenings in the "Reverse Shot" silent film series, presented by Cindependent as a part of the 2026 Fotofocus Biennial. The screening features 4 short films from female directors of the silent film era:
The Drunken Mattress - Alice Guy-Blache, 1906 (9 min)
Suspense. - Lois Weber, 1913 (11 min)
Cinderella - Lotte Reiniger, 1922 (13 min)
The Seashell and the Clergymen - Germaine Dulac, 1928 (41 min)
Films are accompanied by live scoring from Leia Bulger and Annie D and followed by a discussion led by Northern Kentucky University film professor Sara Drabik.
About the Series
Cindependent presents "Reverse Shot," a silent film series at the Woodward Theater that reframes the cinematic landscape of the early 20th century. This series grapples with collective memory and conventional understandings of cinema's early days. What gets lost in our understanding of where cinema has come from and how does it shape our ideas of where it is now? The aim of this project is to open thought and discourse around the ideas of linear progress in cinematic representation and social values vs an ever-present confrontation between diverse, bold voices and homogenous systems.
